Carcassonne in south-west France was the base, giving access to the surrounding wine region of Languedoc-Roussillon, including Limoux, said to be the original home of sparkling wine. The area is rich in Roman and Cathar history and the stunning hilltop medieval city (La Cité) is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It overlooks the River Aude and is a popular stop for travellers on the Canal du Midi. The group enjoyed visits to several estates including Famile Antech, Domaine La Louviere, Château Eulalie and Château Cendrillon. A full report will follow shortly.

Tour of Galicia and Bierzo
29th Sept - 4th Oct 2025
This year's main tour was to North West Spain, visiting the Ribeira Sacra, Bierzo and Rias Baixas. These regions are all steeped in winemaking history but have only recently been discovered when iconic winemakers like Jose Palacios and Raul Perez began projects in these regions. Big names in Spanish winemaking quickly followed including La Rioja Alta and more recently Vega Sicillia. During this trip we visited some of the most prestigious wineries in each region, including Bodegas Algueira, Castro Ventosa, Demencia, Rias Baixas and Finca Scintilla.
The coastal Rias Baixas region has become famous for white wines made from Albarino grapes and in this region we visited Forjas de Salines, Lagar de Fornelos and the renowned Bodegas Alabamar, where we enjoyed a traditional feast and tasting of eleven of the estate’s wines. A wonderful experience visiting one of the less well known, but up-and-coming, Spanish wine regions. For a full report please click here.
CHWC Annual Dinner
23rd June 2025
The Charles Hastings Wine Club Annual Dinner was this year held at the historic Racquet Club in Liverpool. We were welcomed with a glass of the newest Tanners own brand English fizz which was very gentle and charming. Seated for dinner, we enjoyed the first of our starters, a pleasing smoked salmon accompanied by a Sancerre wine from Firmin Dezat. Firmin's Sancerre Rosé was a popular choice to go with the second starter of wild mushroom a la crème with toasted focaccia. The main course of slow braised lamb shank was paired with two delightful red wines – Gancedo Mencia, Vino de Altura and Gigondas, Domaine du Cayron. Our cheese course was paired with a trusty Noval 10 year old Tawny Port and we finished with a classic sticky toffee pudding with the rich and delicious Chateau Guiraud, 1er cru classe Sauternes.
Everybody left content with a very full stomach and it was fabulous to catch up with old friends and make new ones too! Special thanks to the staff at the Racquet Club for a tremendous evening.
Short Tour to Sancerre
5th - 8th June 2025
Our recent short tour was in the beautiful town of Sancerre, in the Loire Valley. The region is famed for its delicious white wines, made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape, but we also sampled some delicious Pinot Noirs too. The group stayed in the stunning Le Panoramic Hotel which, like it's name suggests, has amazing views over the surrounding vineyards. Vineyards visited included Chateau de Tracy, Firmin Dezat, Jean Max Roger, Jean-Paul Balland, Stephanie & Arnaud Dezat and Jean Pabiot et Fils. The group also enjoyed cheese-making at a goat farmhouse and dinners at Michelin Guide restaurants. A full report can be found here.
Spring Weekend to Carlisle
4th - 6th April 2025
An informative and enjoyable weekend, based at the Fleece Hotel at Ruleholme, near Brampton. The group enjoyed a visit and tasting at the Annandale Distillery plus heritage trips to the Devil’s Porridge museum, Lowther castle, Birdoswald Roman Fort, Lanercost Priory and Tullie House museum. As usual, it was an ideal weekend for foodies, culminating in a delicious dinner at the atmospheric Naworth Castle, all accompanied by superb wine.
Zoom Christmas Wine Tasting
13th December 2024
It was good to see so many of you at the Zoom tasting in December – 52 of you, which was excellent. For a change, we started with an Australian bubbly, from Adelaide Hills, which was excellent value. We went on to compare two white wines (Tanners White Burgundy and a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc) and two French reds (Chateau Argadens and Crozes-Hermitage). We finished by bringing back memories of the short tour to the Setúbal area of Portugal with a wonderful Moscatel. Being just before Christmas, we all thoroughly enjoyed the chat as well as the wine and are looking forward to repeating it in 2025!
Short Tour to Lisbon
17th - 20th October 2024
A group of 30 enjoyed visits to 5 wineries and a palace over three days. The visits were all to the Setúbal area on the south side of the River Tagus, and included the estates of Palhoça, Herade de Espirra, Quinta do Piloto, and Bacalhȏa. An exciting tour with incredible Moscatels! A full report can be found here.
38th Annual Dinner in Belfast
24th June 2024
This was the fifth time we have dined at the Ulster Reform Club and once again we were not only bowled over by the quality of the food but were also blessed with warm, dry weather for our pre-prandial bubbly on the terrace. Each wine was introduced by a representative of Tanners.
Tour to Southern Rhone
12th - 19th May 2024
Staying in Avignon's Hotel de l’Horloge, the group enjoyed an interesting few days with plenty of tastings at some of the area's best wineries as well as free time to see the sights. Visits included Domaine de l’Amandine, Domaine la Collière, Domaine le Clos des Cazaux, Domaine du Cayron, Domaine des Bernadines, Domain Richaud, Domaine Roger Perrin, Vieux Télégraphe and Domaine des Carabiniers. The final day was spent at the Brotte Wine Museum, Famille Gonnet and the Chocolaterie Castelain. The tour was a true gastronomic delight, rounded off with dinner in the Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant Avenio. A full report by Stephen Millar can be found here.

On both evenings the group enjoyed fabulous 3-course dinners in the River Restaurant of the Dart Marina Hotel, accompanied by wine pairings from Tanners Wines.
